Local indigenous cotton (Baduy Cotton) scarf lovingly handwoven by the Baduy women, a soothing and cooling cotton that is organic in its nature, hand dyed and botanically printed by Ika (25), a beautiful aqua base with botanical patterns using locally foraged florals and foliage. Distinctive feature includes hand-wound tassels.

ABOUT THE MAKER:

Arae was founded by Masrur one of the five co-founders whom I had the privilege of working with during this 5 month project. Founded in 2018, a thriving local brand based in West Java, Indonesia. Masrur and his team of 60 artists guided me through each process from start to completion.

Arae supports a sustainable approach implementing botanical printing and natural dyeing processes using biodegradable material. A portion of their profits go right back into their community to educate the youth, empowering local craftspeople and their heritage in art as well as raising awareness on environmental and social issues.

The scarves are a locally grown handwoven Baduy cotton specifically by the Baduy women. The art of weaving belongs to the Baduy tribe who have built a strong foundation on their ancestral roots that further strengthens the fabrics character as their traditional cloth.

There is no form of electricity or means of communication, this is when Masrur and his team play a crucial role in providing opportunities within the community, to do this they walk almost 3 miles to visit the local village. Mr and Mrs Ramin from the Baduy tribe work alongside Masrur to communicate and oversee the clan of women weavers in the village.
